While there are reports this is a new company in the group, it also seems more like an acquisition. After all, Maciej Weiss and Rafał Staszewski, the creators of the Spokko brand, have been developing casual mobile games since January 2009. While waiting for clarification, it’s worth mentioning that Spokko now has financial backing from CD Projekt Red and access to its IP, potentially including The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077.
In fact, it appears Spokko is working on an unnamed mobile project corresponding to one of CD Projekt Red’s IPs, as Adam Kiciński, President of the CD Projekt Group, stated, “[Spokko] approached us with an interesting idea based on one of our brands – an idea we decided to invest in. We want to expand our business with innovative concepts and solutions, and the vision presented to us by the Spokko team represents an entirely novel creative angle.”
Weiss and Staszewski are joining the board group, and concerning this development, Weiss revealed, “We have substantial experience with casual game development, but this time around we want to work on a far more advanced and ambitious project”. This hopefully means that the latest project is something gamers will happily invest themselves in.
While it could be sometime before games see the fruits of Spokko’s labor, Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely worth looking into. In fact, the upcoming RPG title has recently detailed its supported language, its RPG mechanics, and its leveling system. Of course, many companies and designers may love to be in Spokko’s shoes, especially with the dedication to its games shown by CD Projekt Red, so it’s also worth mentioning the company is hiring.
It remains to be seen exactly what Spokko is working on, but the developer now has a lot going for it. If it creates a game as ambitious as Cyberpunk 2077’s consequence system, that will definitely cement it within CD Projekt’s brand.
CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 currently lacks an official release date but is expected to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
